Keystone May / June 2008 - Our Parish Bulletin

We are about to start the new academic year, and parents with the best of intentions often do the wrong things.

Parents expect their child to be academically brilliant, a sports person, smart and successful. Their world has often no place for less or differently talented people and parents forget that every child has his own set of skills, each child is a star in his own way. The competitive and harsh world we live in, force parents to use the wrong yardsticks.

If a child performs unfairly at school he is branded as lazy, naughty and useless. Instead of trying to understand why the child is a slow learner he or she gets a thrashing from his father. This makes the child withdrawn, depressed and often aggressive and prone to violence to get more attention.

We want our children to be successful in life. But some children only blossom later on in life. Albert Einstein was a failure in school. A mistake which many parents make is to compare their child with that of the neighbour. With the best of intentions we tend to do this all the time. This undermines the child's self confidence and can leave scars for life.

And finally remember that a child needs love and the feeling of being wanted at home. Just because you have plenty of money is no reason to give your child too much. Let him earn money the hard way - or else he will always be dependent on you. Try and keep an eye on how the money is being spent, what sort of things the child invests in.

Teach your child the value of money.

Remember that your child is a very keen observer and for better or worse will imitate and do all the things that he sees you doing. The teacher in school cannot be held responsible for everything the child does at school or at home.

- Fr. Aloysius Murzello

This season of the year is filled with expectation, excitement and enjoyment. The old educational year is ended and the new one about to begin.

The city trees are in exuberant bloom against blue skies that will soon turn gray. It is time to laze on the beach and chill out in the hills. One can learn new skills and take on part time jobs for work experience.

Many people now go abroad on holidays, while others enjoy an Indian Summer, sight seeing. Many stay home to join in parish holiday activities. It's a great time for Family Reunions.

It is also the month of Our Lady. The roadside heritage crosses are bedecked and the Rosary is reverently recited.

Let us embrace the words of the old hymn -

"Let us mingle together, Voices joyful and gay,
Singing hymns to Our Mother, Tis her own month of May."

- Marie D'Souza
